About Silver Sprocket

Silver Sprocket is a radical indie comics publisher, gallery, and comic book store moving into a new location at 1018 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110.

As a very small organization, we all wear many hats and do a wide variety of jobs every day.

We cater to a diverse San Francisco community and international community with art and comics created by people with a wide variety of backgrounds in terms of their ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, neurodiversities, disabilities, and socio-economic statuses. We strive to empower direct action, showcasing comics by artists telling their own stories with real cultural value as opposed to the corporate intellectual properties of Marvel/DC.

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is a friendly, outgoing, and socially conscious book nerd who has fun talking about their favorite indie comics.
This job is a lot of work and a good opportunity to learn about diy art and publishing.

Starting pay is $18/hr. We are presently looking for 4 or 5 days per week worth of staffing, which could be one person “full-time” or a few people “part-time.”

Responsibilities include:
-Packing and sending mail-order and wholesale orders using our “Shipstation” software
-Folding and organizing t-shirts / framing and displaying artwork
-Organizing and moving boxes of books up to 50LB
-Keeping the shop and office clean, organized and tidy, including our inventory of books, shirts, pins, stickers, etc
-Talking to customers about books, making recommendations, being familiar with our catalog
-Working the cash-register with our “Shopify” point of sale system
-Written and verbal communication with customers, vendors, and collaborators
-Staffing the gallery/shop during parties/events

Opportunities for growth dependent on the applicant’s interests, including helping with social media, PR, marketing, sales, distribution, production, events, printing, accounting, graphic design, editorial, artist outreach, buying/sourcing the freshest indie comics and art from around the world, scouting new talent, and any/all other facets of Silver Sprocket’s operations.

Not a requirement, but we would *LOVE* for our new crew member to be fluent in Spanish so that we may better serve our local Mission District neighborhood and contribute towards sourcing Spanish-language indie comics and zines.

We would also *LOVE* a new crew member with printing experience as we build out our printing resources, including a Risograph printer, trimming and binding equipment. In our new space we aim to provide DIY printing resources so that members of the local community and visitors can literally make their own comics. *This is something we will all be learning more about from our friends at Tiny Splendor in Oakland.

Other bonus skill sets worth mentioning: fluency in ASL or other languages, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Word/Excel or Google Docs/Sheets, and WordPress/web design.

Our hours of operation are presently 12noon to 7pm daily/8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
All work will take place in the 1018 Valencia St retail space.

We are available to conduct interviews and provide tours of the workspace in the afternoons on Monday, Thursday, and Fridays. We would ideally hire a candidate for a trial period and then assess future plans.

If you are interested in applying or have any questions, please send an e-mail with a cover letter and resume to both avi@silversprocket.net and josh@silversprocket.com. Please include links to any of your existing work such as art in a portfolio or on social media, or clippings of your writing.

You do not have to be a “creator” or “artist” to be a good fit for this role, but we are looking for an enthusiasm for the comics and art that we champion.
